One Life Under God

Back to Faith: A Daily Roadmarch

A devotional forged through real life.

Many believers want a deeper relationship with God. They want to read Scripture consistently, grow stronger in their faith, and build the kind of spiritual discipline that carries them through life’s challenges.

But daily life often gets in the way.
Schedules get busy.
Distractions pile up.
And the habit of spending time with God slowly slips away.

What many people need isn’t more information.

They need a simple daily rhythm that helps them return to God’s Word every day.

The discipline that shaped a colonel’s faith.

  • Scripture
Read and meditate on God’s Word.
  • Observation
Reflect on what the passage reveals about God and His truth.
  • Application
Consider how Scripture speaks to real life.
  • Prayer
Respond to God with humility and faith.

For years, Colonel (Retired), Chels Chae began each day the same way: opening the Bible, reflecting on Scripture, and recording what God was teaching him in a personal devotional journal.

Through decades of military leadership, personal trials, and life experience, that daily habit became a steady anchor in his life.

Those honest reflections, written over years of walking with God, became the foundation for: One Life Under God–Back to Faith: A Daily Roadmarch.

He uses the S.O.A.P. devotional method developed by his pastor and friend, Dr. Wayne Cordeiro.

Through this simple structure, readers can go through the Bible in a year and build a deeper daily walk with God.

This is more than a devotional.

Faith tested.

Faith lived.

Faith shared.

Through years of leadership and service, Chels learned that faith must be more than something we talk about.

It must be lived daily.

In this devotional, he shares the lessons God taught him through Scripture, leadership, and personal experience—inviting readers to develop the same daily habit that sustained him.

Praise from Leaders

“I am a huge fan of devotionals because they encourage us to communicate with God daily. When we do that, our faith is strengthened and we will walk closer with our Lord. I believe Chels Chae's devotional, One Life Under God will help you do just that.

Just as a good football coach stresses the fundamentals to their players, Chels does the same thing with this book. Every day you will get a scripture to read and then be asked to apply that portion of God's word to your life. Each and every day it will emphasize the basics of the Christian life: trusting God, choosing obedience daily, and fixing our eyes on Jesus rather than the distractions around us. This is a book for anyone who wants to live with integrity, lead with humility, and finish well.

No matter where you are in your Christian journey I believe this roadmarch with Jesus will encourage you to keep moving forward, one faithful step at a time.”

TONY DUNGY,
Super Bowl–winning Head Coach, Author, and Speaker

“There are countless books about faith, and then there are a rare few that are written from faith—born not in comfort, but in obedience; not in ideal conditions, but in the long obedience of everyday life.

Under God – Back to Faith: A Daily Roadmarch belongs to that second and far rarer category. This book did not emerge from a moment of inspiration. It grew out of years of consistency, surrender, and the quiet resolve to meet God day after day.

For more than two decades, Chels has lived a simple but demanding rhythm—opening the Scriptures, observing carefully, applying honestly, and praying earnestly. That pattern has shaped a life long before it shaped a book. What you are holding is not a collection of motivational reflections. It is the byproduct of someone who has shown up consistently, even when no one was watching, and allowed God’s Word to do its slow, refining work.

My prayer is that as you move through these pages, you will rediscover the steady, life-giving power of God’s Word, and be reminded that the Christian life is rarely won in a single moment. It is formed over a lifetime—one step, one mile, one day at a time—under God.”

DR. WAYNE CORDEIRO,
Bestselling Author, Pastor, and Speaker

One Life Under God is written by someone who understands both the demands of military service and the deeper call of faith. Drawing from Scripture and a lifetime of leadership, this devotional reflects the discipline, perseverance, and humility required to walk faithfully with Christ through the most challenging miles of a long march.

It is thoughtful, steady, and personal—much like the roadmarches Chels and I endured in uniform. I believe this book will encourage leaders and believers alike to keep moving forward with purpose and trust in God.”

GENERAL STEPHEN J. TOWNSEND, U.S. ARMY (RET.),
Former Commanding General, U.S. Army Training
and Doctrine Command

“In One Life Under God, Chels Chae brings together two realities that every soldier and every believer understands well: endurance and faithfulness. Drawing from Scripture, leadership experience, and a disciplined walk with God, this book reminds us that faith is not lived in moments of ease, but forged through daily obedience and trust in the Lord.

I have seen Chels lead under pressure, think clearly in complexity, and remain grounded in values that matter. Those same qualities are evident throughout this devotional. It speaks to anyone who understands that the Christian life; like a roadmarch, requires commitment, perseverance, and reliance on God every step of the way.

This book will encourage readers to stay faithful, lead with integrity, and keep moving forward with Christ, even when the path is demanding.

During my 36 years in the Army I grew to realize the importance of my spiritual development. As I grew in my faith in Jesus, I grew as a leader. An important part of that spiritual development was a daily devotional. I wish I would have had a devotional like this one. I encourage you to read it and pray on the wisdom that he has imparted in it.”

BENJAMIN R. MIXON,
Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (Retired),
Former USARPAC Commander

“One Life Under God reflects the same disciplined, purposeful mindset I expect of leaders: clarity of mission, consistency of effort, and faithfulness under pressure.

I had the privilege of serving as Chels’ commander in the Eighth United States Army and observing his development as a leader who understands that endurance matters more than speed, and character matters more than comfort. This book mirrors that understanding. Faith, as Chels presents it, is not emotional or situational, it is forged through daily commitment, accountability, and obedience.

Drawing from Scripture, military experience, and a lifetime of leadership, Chels frames faith as a roadmarch: deliberate, demanding, and transformative. Each reflection challenges the reader to think clearly, act decisively, and remain grounded in truth regardless of circumstance.

As someone who has spent a career training leaders for complex and unforgiving environments, I recognize authenticity when I see it. One Life Under God is authentic. It equips the reader not merely to believe, but to endure, lead, and finish well. I commend this book to leaders, servicemembers, and anyone seeking a disciplined, resilient walk of faith.”

DAVIS P. VALCOURT,
Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (Retired),
Former Eighth U.S. Army Commander

“As an educator and lifelong student of both Scripture and the human condition, I appreciate the clarity, theological soundness, and practical wisdom crafted into these pages. As Chels’ friend of nearly fifty years, I confirm and endorse the authenticity behind every word. This march is real because the walk has been real.

While Chels has entitled this book a roadmarch, I have known him long enough to challenge that description. A roadmarch follows a designated trail: an established route that usually shows up on a map. Chels has taken the more difficult route, a spiritual foot march that crosses unknown and unexpected terrain, he gauges. With a full load. Unsure of what he'll find along the way, Chels marks a way for we who follow.

Foot marching this way requires regular check–ins to stay on course to the divine objective. One Life Under God provides that map check. Unexpected obstacles and a great deal more resistance attempt to hinder, especially as one draws closer to the King—there’s more crawling past unforgiveness, climbing over pride, and bushwhacking through idolatry than we experience taking the prepared path.

It is written in Matthew 7, “Difficult is the way that leads to life.” Chels marches among us as a Christ follower who navigates that most challenging path to eternal life, an exemplar of courage and faith, and he generously shares that route with us.

Good leaders say, “Follow me.” Great leaders say, “Follow Jesus.” In One Life Under God and with his own life, Chels makes both claims. Accept the challenge.”
